...by a crafting bug!
I spend a lot of time at my desk. Sometimes I just want to put my feet up. I find that I'm always trying to prop them up on a little heater that I keep under my desk. It's too small for both of my feet. My right foot got tired of fighting with my left foot! I decided I needed a foot stool. I looked them up online. I found something that I had in mind but the price was crazy high. Like $40!!! I can make my own danged foot stool AND BETTER!
Here are all my supplies. Hubs cut me a board to the length I wanted(we went with 20 inches). He also cut the little feet from a fat dowel(4 inches tall) We looked at furniture feet at Home Depot but the cost was ridiculous. I also used some quilting batting and foam. You might notice that the foam is an egg crate pad for beds. It was way cheaper this way than buying a 4 inch foam pad. The material is some I had in my personal supply. Hubs has a compressor nail/staple gun. I also used some spray adhesive.
So, I've cut out my material, batting and foam pieces. I used the spray adhesive to glue 3 foam pieces to each other to create the thickness I wanted. My dowel feet are ready with screws already put in them. The wood piece also has the metal screw thingymajigs that the dowels will screw into(hubs did that for me when he cut all the wood. What a good little husband he is!).
I used the spray adhesive to stick the foam pieces to the wood(this step isn't necessary but it helps keep things from sliding around while you're working). I then placed the wood and foam on the batting with the foam side down. I stapled the batting down to the wood.
After finishing with stapling the batting down I trimmed the excess batting off the back.
Now I started stapling the material. I started in the middle and worked my way to the sides and finished with the pesky corners.
Yes, all that excessive material had to be trimmed as well.
I finished by screwing in the dowel feet.

Ahhhhh...my feet are soooo happy!
In total I probably spent $20 on supplies(mostly on the dowel and foam). But that also saved me half the cost of buying one premade.
Eleventy hundred points to anyone who noticed my pretty red walls in my office.
