gettin' to know me!

Go visit Mann Land 5 to Get To Know more peeps!

1. Do you iron your sheets? Uuuuuhhhhhhhhh...HECK NO!!!
2. Your dream car is....? I like SUV's and trucks. I don't have a current favorite though. I'm driving a Nissan Xterra and I do love it. Although, when hauling a bunch of kids around plus the mutt it can seem kinda small.
3. Do you have an innie or an outie belly button? An innie!
4. What meal do you look forward to the most..breakfast, lunch, or dinner? Usually dinner. The other meals are just plain boring. Except Sunday after church. I love breakfast at Janet's Cafe! Yummmm...
5. Favorite mascara? Don't wear a lot of makeup so I don't have a favorite brand. I have something like Maybelline right now.
6. What would you say your decorating style is..traditional, modern, eclectic, country, french country, shabby chic, etc..? Right now pretty eclectic. We are in a very small place. It's hard to have a style here. My living room alone acts as a living room, dining room, library, bedroom for a teenager, foyer...you name it my living room does it!
7. Have you ever been skinny dipping? No!!!!! I swear!
8. I hate the smell of...? Throw up, outhouses, seafood, bad breath, cookies...haha just kidding on that last one.

We shall call her...Pixy

Haha...get it? Pixy! Pics-y...er...never mind!
I love this dang thing. I wanted her. I begged for her. I did the pout, lip stuck out and all. I got her!!! We bought her at a time when we could not afford to. On credit...doh! Don't tell Dave Ramsey. Anywho...she's long been paid off now.
This is a scanner. It scans pictures, negatives and yes, documents too. Most people have a 3 in 1 printer. Knowing I wanted to do my pictures (and now my mom's and hopefully my MIL's soon) we went with a really good model scanner. I have never scanned with a 3 in 1 printer so I do not know of their quality but I'm highly impressed with the quality of my dear Pixy.
This is what the inside and lid look like for doing negatives. You put your negatives in a neg holder and it sits down the middle of the glass plate.
For doing actual pics or documents there is a white clip on thingymajigger. With this you can utilize the whole glass plate.
All the extra necessities that came with Pixy. (Plus the 2 homemade inserts for our really really really old outofdate negatives...has anyone even seen or heard of 110 mm or 26 mm negatives?)(see older post for pics of said older negs)
Hmmm...what do I do with myself while scanning pics(it is time consuming)? Why, I open the little curtain that partitions my desk from the rest of the bedroom and I watch movies or I play the wii. Yup, I can play the wii from my desk. LOL!!!!!
Did you see my product placement in the pic above? *sigh* I love Mr. Darcy!
Closer look at what I'm up to. Yup, I'm on level 3!
Reasons why EVERYONE should have a scanner or 3 in 1 printer:
1. Scanning old family photo's...duh!
2. Scanning documents.
3. The other day hubs had to go out of town for work. Well, he's Rose's science homework helper. I scanned in her homework. Sent it to him in an email. Later, he called her and they did homework over the phone!
4. When we moved back to CA hubs came out 2 months before me so he could start working. When selling the house I would scan documents for him to sign then he could fax them back to our realtor. Hello!!! Awesome!
5. I scan junk all the time from Rose's schooling so I can email it to her parents. (If you're new to Kassie's Beach...our niece is living with us for this school year.)
6. I don't think I need to go on and on...surely you're convinced! Go get ya one!

When is a good Photo op?

Holy mother of all things saintly!
I have been very busy scanning in all of our family's negatives. I mean, heck, I volunteered.
Who knew my mom took thousands of pictures even before it was cool to do so?

The box of negatives is humongostrous!
See???
Here's the thing. All the negatives from the 70's and most of the 80's are on either a 110 mm or a 26 mm film strip. My scanner did not come with a negative holder that fits those sizes. So I had to fashion my own.
This is the 35 mm holder that came with the scanner.
This is another holder for something else...like slides or something...that also came with the scanner.
My homemade thingymabobbers! I traced the negatives as well as the holder size then cut out a matching piece out of card stock. Then I used a good ole fashioned Sharpie to make it black. The scanner seems to only read the negatives when they are surrounded by black.
Hey...it fits! Who knew?
These are a few of the pains in my neck negatives causing ALL the problems which are giving me no problems at all.
If it's been a while since you've seen a negative...(I know, we're all spoiled rotten with our digital cameras)...here is a regular 35 mm negative strip.
This is what comes up on my screen for the scanning process. I scan everything into photoshop. That way it's all there for fixing and cropping and all the lovely things I do before saving it to my computer.
After it's been scanned in it looks pretty rough. I first turn the photo so it's upright. Then I crop it back to it's normal size. I do an auto level. And lastly, I sometimes use the bandaid tool on it. Trust me! 30+ year old negatives are sometimes not lookin' so hot! Some of these need lots of work.
After I worked it up a bit...not too much, of course. Gotta leave some room for improvement. The picture is now saved to my computer! This is Cookie by the way. Cute little Pomeranian(sp?).
Okay
So, all that just to say...

OMG...look what I found!
It's just not right!
My mom really had a thing for nakey pics. I mean, when we were babies...even toddlers it was kinda cute.
Who in their ever loving mind stops a shower in progress to take a nakey pic of 2 not so little girls?
MY MOM!!!
That's who!
There is a word for what we call this kinda of photography...
Just sayin'!
No worries...I cropped it.
But, seriously, look at my face.
Dude, MOM, WTH...GET OUT!
My sister didn't seem to mind the photo op did she? Look at her smile! Cheese!!!

Post It Note Tuesday

This is the newest MeMe bandwagon I am jumping on. It just seemed like fun! Most of these are snarky...they mean next to nothing...please don't try reading more into them...mmmkay!
Clearly, this is hosted by Supah. You think I'm snarky...go check her out! Hey, and while you're there...play along!

I really wanted to do this early this morning. But...we don't have internet. Hubs has a Sprint internet card from work that I use in the evenings. I do have an iPhone but I NEVER blog from it. I was reminded why today. It is super slow and the screen is small making it harder to see. I tried to do it anyway. I managed to create my Post Its but I could not save to my computer so I saved them into Flickr. I tried ALL DAY to get them out of Flickr and into a post. I finally gave up and decided to wait for hubs to come home from work. Now Facebook on an iPhone is awesome! Anyone wanna facebook? lol

gettin' to know me!

Head over to Mann Land 5 to get to know more peeps!

1. Waffles, pancakes or french toast? Mmmmm...French Toast! At home I make pancakes from the 'just add water' muffin packets. So yummy. My fav is the triple berry. Try it sometime!
2. Dream home..What would it look like? Oooh...I LOVE old farm houses...the 100 year old kind with lots of staircases. A wraparound porch is a must. I would also love to have a mountain retreat log cabin. Hubs' would be a big sailboat.
3. Favorite sport to watch during the Winter Olympics? Ice skating. I sure miss Michelle Kwan!
4. The first word that comes to mind when describing yourself? LOUD!!!
5. Dresses, pants (jeans, leggings, etc.) or skirts? Jeans!!!
6. What is your favorite time of day? I'm a night person. I could stay up all night. But, on those rare occasions that I'm up really early in the morning I love the peace and quietness of 7ish AM. I love the birds chirping and the freshness of the new day. Too bad I miss it most days.
7. Beach or Mountains..which do you prefer? Mountains! I grew up in the Mtns of San Diego. I did not appreciate the beach until we moved to TN. I adore the beaches of NC...the Outer Banks! We visit the beach much more often now that we are back in San Diego...mostly for our puppers though!
8.Will you watch the Super Bowl? We don't have tv so we would have to make a point of going to my mom's to see it. If the rest of the household had a vote then yes, we would.

Goodbye, old friend

16 years ago, fresh out of high school, I moved from my dad's in the country to my mom's in the city. Easier to work and continue schooling that way. Growing up on a ranch you have many many animals who come and go from your lives. The emotional attachment to these animals is next to nothing. The cats in particular would come and go very quickly (coyotes, don't ya know). They bred quickly so kittens were always on hand. We were NOT allowed to have these cats come into the house.
Anyhoodles
After a few months living with my mom I decided I just HAD to have a kitty. There were plenty of kittens to choose from on the ranch. Without asking for permission, I brought home my very first ever indoor kitty. He was about 5-6 weeks old. So small. So fluffy. So playful. Shockingly, my mom let me keep him. I named him Simba(mostly because a friend told me I could not name him a main character name from a movie...so I did!) We had to neuter him and she wanted him declawed(just the fronts). *No hate mail here please. It's already done and over with now so let's not get our panties in a dither.*
About three years later, my mom brought home a kitty of her own(That would be Pepper). Simba adored baby Pepper. As she grew, they quickly became life mates. I always knew I would not be able to separate the kitties if I moved. As Simba had become more of a family cat and Pepper was clearly my mom's cat the choice was easy. I had to leave Simba in her care. Pepper would have hated living with me. She is a one human kitty. Simba officially became my mom's cat in 2003, when hubs and I moved away to Knoxville. We had even already added a new kitty to ease the heartbreak of leaving him. You met Aria a few weeks ago.
Simba has had a good, happy, long life. He developed some arthritis in his hips the last few years. The last year or so he declined quickly. We knew his time was near. Yesterday, my mom had to make the tough decision to have him put down. He had basically stopped eating. I was super glad that I had gone over with my new camera a couple weeks ago and got pictures of him. I was attempting to get Pepper for my mom but she is kinda bratty and Simba was always a ham. I took a bunch of really good pics of him. They do show his health decline though.
January 2010. He was a little over 5 lbs at his death.
His lifetime average weight was 13 lbs.
Jan. 2010
A few years ago.
Jan. 2010. Look at that frail body. At full health.
Last year he was still quite playful.
Simba, we miss you!
You loved to climb in boxes, or laundry baskets. You did not mind if we put the box over you, trapping you. One of your favorite games! You also loved plastic bags, twist ties, milk top rings, soda caps, Christmas bows and that one particular stuffed rabbit*wink, wink*! You loved kitty treats, hot dogs, tuna, evaporated milk and soft kitty food, even though those were rare treats. Except the kitty treats, you got those daily. Despite being neutered, you still had boyish tendencies (the rabbit and sometimes a kitty blankie eewww), meowing VERY loudly. You had a very delicate stomach which grandma hated cleaning up after. She threatened to throw you to the curb daily but we all know she loved you too much to do more than threaten. We love to refer to you as our Simbiotic! You will be missed, old faithful friend!

Our fun Saturday!

Go to the bathroom! Grab a cold drink and a salty snack! This is gonna be a long, picture filled post.
We have our niece and nephew for the weekend again. I can't not practice using Zoey(the new camera) on them. I took 775 pictures in just one day. It was a doozy editing them. I got it down to 200 and some odd number. I have been taking much better pics as I've learned the tricks. I had to delete some great pics as I ended up with many duplicates of the same shot. My camera shoots that quickly. We started our day off at home playing in the yard. It was a gorgeous day. Then we went to Kathleen's very first basketball game...ever. She did good. Hopefully by high school she'll be a knock-out player. By the way, her team won 31-10. woot woot! Then we went to my mom's for a quick snack and so Kathleen could change out of her uniform. We then left to go to Flynn Springs Park by my mom's house. The kids had fun. We like to go to new parks from time to time to alleviate boredom. Then we headed home for dinner, wii playing, a movie and lastly, a knock-out drag out fight with miss Rose. She has no edit button. Nor does she learn quickly. Thankfully we kept the other two kids occupied in our bedroom on the wii and they were no worse for the wear. They have an ADHD sister so they know the ropes only too well. Oh well, here's to a better tomorrow!
The kids in the morning. But wait, where's Rose?
Oh yeah! there she is. With a pout. I would not let her in on the pics till she turned her frown upside down.
Let's go crazy!
Oh hey...there she is! Much better.
Crazy faces!
Next up...the trampoline.
Check out that height.
She just kept on jumping! All of them caught air this time. Taking a much needed break. They kept arranging themselves for the pics. I just stood there and snapped the camera.
Back in the air.
Shew, we're tired! Grrrr I see you!!!
Rawrrrr
Next up, the see saw.Always the climber.
Whoa!
Kathleen at basketball.
She's number 3.
Go TEAM!!!
She played defense like a madman. (sometimes even when she was on offense...hehe)
Work it girl!
Time out!
Final score! At the park. They loved this tire swing. Especially when they got Uncle Chuck to recreate some Disney "E" rides. (I googled it for those who've never heard this term before. My mom used to talk about it which is why I know what it is.)
What a ham!
Weeeee...
wahoo!
Oh yeah!
I'll show you how it's really done.

I'm on top of the world.
Nope, I am!
Really...I am.
(setting a bad example)
See? Told ya!
So much fun. This is what happened as soon as he was seat belted in.
